Tomahawk Real Estate & Community Information

Tomahawk is a small town of only 3,820 residents nestled in Northern Wisconsin. With an elevation of 1447 feet residents enjoy average summer temperatures of 80 degrees. Winter temperatures can get pretty cold. However, the drop in temperature also brings the snow and the snow brings such activities as skiing and snowmobiling events.

Tomahawk started as a fur trading community in 1837 and later became a logging community. The town was officially incorporated in 1891 and experienced rapid growth. Soon, three railroads would be established for transportation and shipping; many sawmills were opened; and a three-story hotel was opened. Some of the events since that time include:

  • 1897: Margaret McBride is one of the first high school graduates and moves to New York to become a well-known vocalist.
  • 1906: The first automobile is brought to town by future mayor William T. Bradley
  • 1914: North Tomahawk Avenue becomes the landing site of the first airplane to fly into Tomahawk.
  • 1936: The town celebrates its 50th anniversary.
  • 1951: Local resident Einar Ingman gets the Medal of Honor for valor in Korea.
  • 1986: Tomahawk celebrates its 100th anniversary.
